Jean Goebel, Dan Rather
Rather began his career in 1950 as an Associated Press correspondent in Huntsville, Texas. He later worked as a correspondent for the Associated Press, different Texas radio stations, and the Houston Chronicle. In 1955, he released an essay about heroin.
So under guidance of the Houston Police Department, he tried a drug dosage, which he described as “a specific type of hell.” In January 1954, Rather served in the United States Marine Corps and was sent to the Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego. He was quickly freed, once it was realized that he had rheumatic illness as a child, something he had lied about throughout the recruitment processes.
During the Soviet–Afghan War, he was filmed broadcasting near the scene while donning a traditional mujahideen headgear and attire. Rather drew the attention of Evening News audience and was nicknamed “Gunga Dan.” His skills became well-known in American comedy strips.
His statements were later revealed to have been influenced by Congressman Charlie Wilson (D-Texas), who coordinated a campaign to aid the vulnerable terrorist outfit. The CIA began its largest covert effort to assist and arm the mujahideen. The Soviets ultimately left Afghanistan.
