Who Was John Osteen?
John Osteen was an American pastor and televangelist. He was the founder of Lakewood Church since its inception in 1959 until his death in 1999 and his son Joel Osteen took over. His television program, John Osteen, aired on weekly basis reaching millions of viewers in the United States and approximately 50 other countries for 16 years.

Osteen’s parents were Willis Jackson Osteen and Ellen Mae Leigh Brawner. In his early teenage years, he was not was not saved as he frequently attended nightclub parties. However, things turned around and he got saved in his late teenage years.
He was ordained to the gospel ministry towards his 18th birthday. After dedicating his life to God, he served as an assistant pastor at First Baptist Church based in San Diego.

Osteen was initially married to Emma Jean Shaffer but their marriage faced troubles and they subsequently divorced. He married Dolores Pilgrim Osteen on September 17, 1954 and they were blessed with sis children namely; Joel Osteen, Paul Osteen, Justin Osteen, Lisa Osteen, Tamara Osteen and April Osteen Simons.

Osteen died of a heart attack on January 23, 1999 in Houston, Texas. Soon after his death, Joel took over and he has since expanded the church that has transformed millions of lives.

On May 10, 1959, Osteen and his wife, Dolores, founded Lakewood Baptist Church in a filthy, deserted feeding store in northeast Houston. They began it as a charismatic Baptist church. Later, the church eliminated the word “Baptist” and then became nondenominational.
Osteen established Lakewood Church in Houston, Texas, in 1959, and expanded it to a congregation of over 15,000 people with active operations in televangelism, seminars, missionary assistance, and food aid.

After his death, his youngest son, Joel Osteen, became the pastor and he has since enlarged his father’s congregation. Lakewood today has approximately 52,000 audience members and connects millions of people worldwide via television and internet.
