Kathleen Flinn Career As a writer, journalist and chef
Flinn alleges that she started cooking at the age of eight to sustain herself as a pre school child, and she also began writing stories about the same time. She and her parents relocated to Anna Maria Island, Florida, when she was 11 years old, due to her father’s fatal cancer diagnosis; he died two years later. Her third book is about these formative years in her life.
The Sharper Your Knife, the Less You Cry, Flinn’s debut book, was the first to provide an in-depth look at attending and graduating from the prestigious Paris culinary school Le Cordon Bleu. The book has been translated into various languages and is available in over 60 countries around the world.
She chose to use her funds to attend the renowned cooking school after losing her job due to a management reorganization. Flinn intersperses dozens of recipes, recollections of her “wretchedly inadequate” French, stories of competing classmates, and the love story of her developing relationship with her husband throughout the book.
Her second book, The Kitchen Counter Cooking School, details a year-long project inspired by a supermarket encounter with a woman stockpiling processed foods. Flinn used her culinary experience to help novice chefs gain confidence in the kitchen while also reporting on the state of home cooking in general.
