His first gigs were in radio, but professional journalists urged him to make the leap to television. He listened to their advise and worked in television markets east of the Mississippi before joining the WJZ family in 1977.
He has the distinction of anchoring Baltimore’s first early morning newscast, which helped to define early morning news for the broadcast industry. Marty invented the idea of “Just the Fax, Internet, and E-mail,” enabling people to provide comments and opinions during live morning newscasts.
Bass related the story of how he started to become bald in his early/mid-20s and how his TV news producers insisted on him wearing a hairpiece as part of WYPR’s Stoop Storytelling Series. In 1984, after years of wearing a toupee, Bass decided to appear on WJZ without it.
