Paula Jones Lawsuit
Jones filed a sexual harassment lawsuit against Clinton on May 6, 1994, two days before the three-year limitation period lapsed, seeking $750,000 in damages. Jones was initially represented by two Washington, D.C.–area lawyers, Gilbert Davis and Joseph Cammarata.
Susan Carpenter-McMillan, a conservative commentator from California, was named as her press spokesperson. President Clinton’s move for preliminary injunction was granted by Judge Susan Webber Wright, who ruled that Jones had failed to present any damages.
Clinton and his defense lawyer then challenged Jones’ legal ability to sue a sitting president over an incident that took place before the defendant was elected president.
The Clinton defense team claimed that the case should be delayed until after the president had left office because the president’s role is unique and cannot be distracted by private civil litigation.
On April 2, 1998, before the case could go to trial, Judge Wright granted Clinton’s motion to dismiss, claiming that Jones could not show she had suffered any losses. Jones filed an appeal with the United States Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit almost immediately.

Paula Jones Settlement
On November 13, 1998, Clinton agreed to settle with Jones for $850,000, the full amount of her claim, with no apology, in return for her accepting to drop the appeal. Judge Wright ruled in March 1999 that Jones would get just $200,000 from the settlement, with the remaining going toward her legal expenses.
In April 1999, Judge Wright found Clinton in civil contempt of court for giving misleading testimony in the Jones case. She ordered Clinton to pay the court $1,202 and an additional $90,000 to Jones’ lawyers for legal fees incurred, which was much less than the lawyers’ demand of $496,000.
