Ronald Perelman Career As a Businessman
Perelman’s first potential business agreement occurred in 1961, during his first year at the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School. He and his father paid $800,000 for the Esslinger Brewery, then leased it after three years for a profit of $1 million. Their strategic goal was to buy a firm, sell off unnecessary sections to decrease debt and generate profit, return the company to its core business, and then either sell it or keep it for cash flow.
In 1978, he bought Cohen-Hatfield Jewelers with a loan from his wife, Faith Golding, in his first venture as an independent entrepreneur outside from his father’s dependence. Perelman earned $15 million in a year by selling all of the company’s retail outlets and focusing on its profitable wholesale jewelry sector.
Perelman bought MacAndrews & Forbes, a licorice extract and chocolate distributor. He overcame opposition from the company’s management and investors, who tried unsuccessfully to stop the takeover. He began selling bonds in 1983 to acquire the remaining 66 percent interest in MacAndrews & Forbes Group Inc. in order to make the company private.
