Scolari’s first regular appearance was as the title characters’ juggling neighbor in the 1980 sitcom Goodtime Girls. He and Tom Hanks were then cast in another sitcom, Bosom Buddies, portraying guys who dress up as women in order to live in a cheap flat in a women’s-only residence.
Scolari joined the cast of Newhart in 1984, after Bosom Buddies was canceled in 1982. He played Michael Harris, a yuppie local TV producer. He stayed with the show until it ended in 1990.
Scolari’s Broadway credits include Wicked (as the Wizard of Oz), Sly Fox, Hairspray, and Lucky Guy, in which he reunited with his Bosom Buddies co-star Tom Hanks. Off-Broadway, he performed in Old Man Joseph and His Family, The Exonerated, In the Wings, The Music Man, and White’s Lies.
