Good Morning America Ratings
Since the summer of 2012, GMA has maintained its position as the morning show with the highest viewership and key demos. The show continued to enjoy huge rating success towards the start of the 1990’s.
Gibson and Lunden became a formidable duo, but in late 1995, the program slipped and dropped to second place behind Today.
After hosting Good Morning America for 17 years, Lunden chose to retire on September 5, 1997, and ABC News correspondent Lisa McRee took over. Gibson and McRee performed very well in the ratings.
Ratings, however, drastically dropped on May 1, 1998, when Gibson also departed the show to make room for Kevin Newman. Longtime viewers of Good Morning America switched to Today with McRee and Newman as anchors, and the show’s ratings soared.
The ABC News management chose Shelley Ross from the pool of executive producer candidates to boost Good Morning America’s ratings performance, which momentarily dropped to third place among the morning shows in January 1999.
