Phil Perry The Montclairs
Phil Perry was discovered by Catholic nuns when singing high masses at his Catholic Church (St. Elizabeth in East St. Louis), and he was a high-school talent show favorite.
He composed and recorded his debut song “Hey You” with The Montclairs, who were also headquartered in East St. Louis. They were signed to the Archway Records label just before Perry’s 17th birthday in 1969. The song is regarded as the first of Perry’s ‘Old School’ hits, which were successful in the 1970s.
The Montclairs released modest soul ballads for Paula Records in 1972, including “Dreaming’s Out of Season,” “Prelude to a Heartbreak,” and “Begging’s Hard to Do.” The Montclairs left Paula Records in 1975 and dissolved.
Perry subsequently relocated to California, where he recorded as a duo with former Montclair Kevin Sanlin, culminating in two albums for Capitol Records in the early 1980s, produced by Chuck Jackson and Dr. Cecil Hale. One song, “Just to Make You Happy,” achieved decent radio success.
