Angel on My Shoulder
Shelby Flint composed and recorded the song “Angel on My Shoulder” for her 1960 self-titled first album. Early in 1961, the song peaked at No. 22 on the US Billboard Hot 100 singles list.
The song was her only Top 40 hit. The Cascades released a rendition of the song on their 1963 album, Rhythm of the Rain.
Cast Your Fate to the Wind
Vince Guaraldi composed the instrumental American jazz piece “Cast Your Fate to the Wind”; Carel Werber later added a lyric to it. The song was originally issued out by Fantasy as the “Samba de Orpheus” single’s B-side, which had a bossa nova feel.
However, the more appealing and melodic version of the song was preferred by U.S. radio disc jockeys, and as a result, it reached No. 22 on the Billboard Hot 100 pop chart and No. 9 on the Easy Listening list.
Jazz Shades of Black Orpheus was renamed Cast Your Fate to the Wind for next album reissues in an effort to capitalize on the song’s unprecedented success.
On some versions of the album, the label title was printed incorrectly, reading “Cast Your Faith to the Wind,” giving the song’s message an inadvertently funny aspect.
Several musicians across a variety of genres have released covers of the song, including male and female solo vocalists, pop, folk, and rock bands, as well as several instrumentalists.
