Saberi immigrated to Iran in 2003. Her stories were transmitted to a large number of stations throughout the world via the US-based Feature Story News (FSN), and her work was immediately seen and heard by fans and audiences of Channel News Asia, Vatican Radio, Independent Radio News, among others.
She also made guest appearances on PBS, NPR, and Fox News. Saberi’s press license was cancelled by Iranian authorities in 2006, and the FSN bureau in Iran was disbanded. She kept a second press pass, which allowed her to work for the BBC in Iran. It was also subsequently terminated in late 2006.
Saberi lost contacts with the BBC after her second press permit was revoked, but she continued to publish infrequent stories from the nation for NPR, IPS, and ABC Radio. On January 31, 2009, Saberi was detained on the instructions of the Islamic Revolutionary Court, according to an Iranian judiciary spokeswoman on March 3, 2009.
Saberi has Iranian and American citizenship, however Iran does not recognize dual citizenship. Her petition was considered by an Iranian appeals court on May 10, 2009. According to reports, the court rejected the accusations against her on the basis that the United States is not a hostile nation because it is not at war with Iran. Her initial arrest was based on allegations that she was collaborating with a “hostile country” – the United States.
Following Saberi’s release from prison, one of her lawyers stated that she had acquired a sensitive document while working as an interpreter for a prominent clerical lobby. He said that this was utilized as evidence to convict her of spying. He said it was a classified Iranian dossier on the US-led war in Iraq.
