Bae traveled to several countries including Argentina and the United States between 2007 and 2010, where he worked for free in nearby restaurants to gain expertise as a cook and restaurateur.
After relocating to Turkey, he launched his first restaurant in Istanbul in 2010, followed by a restaurant in Dubai in 2014. Bae was criticized by Marco Rubio and the Miami City Council in September 2018 after Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro dined at his Istanbul restaurant.
In November 2019, four of Bae’s former employees accused him of getting a share of their bonuses. They said they were dismissed from his New York eatery for asking inquiries regarding the tips. A trial was scheduled to probe the matter until Bae reached an agreement with his former employees and paid them $230,000 in settlement.
His restaurant in Boston was ordered to close by public health regulators several days after it launched in late September 2020 owing to violations of COVID-19 safety regulations. In October 2021, the British media questioned Bae about a £37,000 cost for a meal at one of his UK restaurants.

The post was viewed 10 million times on Instagram, and he was called “Salt Bae” because of his unusual method of sprinkling salt: dropping it from his fingertips to his forearm, then onto the dish. Despite his international celebrity, early professional assessments of his New York City steakhouse in 2018 were mainly unfavorable.
