In 1996, he was appointed Fox’s principal play-by-play announcer for Major League Baseball, teaming up with Tim McCarver, who had worked initially with his father on CBS. On September 8, 1998, Buck called Mark McGwire’s 62nd home run, which broke Roger Maris’ single-season record.
The game aired live on Fox at peak time throughout the country. It had been rare for a nationally broadcast regular-season match not to be aired on cable since the conclusion of the Monday/Thursday Night Baseball period on ABC in 1989.
